This acts as a visual guide for me to build the installation exactly as drawn. So drawing really is at the core of the process. In terms of the set, I may have specific, sourced objects in mind. I may also be making and printing various elements. These will depend on the initial drawing, in which I’ll also work out all sizing and specifics. There’s inevitably a lot of printing, cutting, and construction at this stage of the project. I make sure I have every element made, sourced, and supplied before I start the next stage of building the set.

How did you develop this way of working? Would you list Demand among your inspirations? I codeveloped a project with the photographer Tom Joye, with whom I share a studio. indd 54 magazine. We hadn’t heard of Thomas Demand before the project, and we both discovered his fabulous work while working on it. I really like and respect his work, which is totally crazy, because it’s all life-size! Could you briefly take us through your general working method? What tools do you use to create your work? When I receive a brief, I’ll imagine the size and the arrangement in my head.
