The new key should fit snugly into the keyways on both the flywheel and crankshaft. There is no method of restoring worn keyways other than to replace the affected parts. However, one can cobble up a repair as described in Chapter 7. Examine the flywheel for damage with particular attention to the hub area (Fig. 3-5). FIG. 3-5. A crack or wallow on the leading edge of the keyway (in the direction of rotation) suggests that the flywheel was loose and overrun by the crankshaft (A). Damage to the trailing edge of the keyway means that the flywheel attempted to overtake the crankshaft (B).

The critical factor is engine speed, or rpm. Figure 1-7 shows power curves for two Briggs engines of almost identical displacement. One is a carryover from the days when engines were made of iron and develops 10 hp. The other represents a latter generation and produces a nominal 11 hp. The 11-hp engine is, of course, more powerful than the antique, but that advantage is limited to the upper end of the rpm scale. At 2600 rpm, both produce slightly more than 8 hp. Drop the speed to 2000 rpm and the older engine begins to show the advantages of conservative valve timing.

Other carburetors use a butterfly choke just aft of the air cleaner. The butterfly must close fully for cold starting (Fig. 2-2). The fuel systems chapter describes how to adjust automatic chokes found on Vacu- and Pulsa-Jet carburetors. Manual chokes engage by moving the control lever past the wideopen-throttle position. Adjusting the Bowden cable usually fixes the problem. A few Walbro carburetors employ a small helper spring that pulls the choke closed with an audible click. Verify that the spring is present and connected.
