Quiet country lanes pass by two churches and front yards that still have hitching posts out front. But for me, the real attraction is poking around the back roads, such as Essex Hill Road and Valley Road. At one time this was the location of the Cathedral Pines, which was a rare stand of old-growth white pines. But a few years back, a tornado cut a swath through the outskirts of town, taking down everything in its path, including the pines. You can still see vivid reminders of the tornado’s power in the broken trunks of enormous trees that stand on the hills like match sticks.
If you are here in September, you won’t want to miss the Belchertown Annual Fair. Just a few The Hills of Central Massachusetts 47 yards down Route 202 to the west is the Stone House Museum, which features artifacts and antiques from the town’s historical association.
