When we recognize that a student has trouble sitting still, we do not give him a sedative to calm him down. We give him a strong stimulant to wake up the brain, recognizing that the activity we are trying to control is merely a symptom, one that can be obviated by adding energy to a brain that is falling asleep. For many boys who show similar symptoms, we can do the same thing without powerful drugs, simply by adding, or allowing for, a certain amount of stimulus in the boys’ environment. Schools, though, do not always welcome extra stimuli, especially the physicality boys often crave, and that tendency is getting worse as pressures on classrooms mount.
