2 The electrical pioneers Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla were just two of many inventors who were described as having produced electromagnetic beams capable of stopping internal combustion engines, giving shocks, killing mice or worse. The confiscation of Tesla’s research papers by the FBI upon his death did nothing to dampen speculation. Whether or not there was any truth behind the stories, however, what such episodes demonstrate is the willingness of many to believe in such devices. And as war broke out in Europe once again, the military, too, took an interest in anything that might provide an edge over the enemy.

By 1954, the team was able to produce a continual output of microwaves, at nano-Watt power. They called their creation the MASER (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). The radiation proved to have considerably less frequency variation than the most stable device previously available, making the maser very attractive for a highprecision frequency standard. For this reason, the US Army Signal Corps also funded some of the research. However, whilst the device was initially publicized as ‘a unique atomic clock’, it would not be perceived as a mere timekeeper for very long.
