Quiet country lanes pass by two churches and front yards that still have hitching posts out front. But for me, the real attraction is poking around the back roads, such as Essex Hill Road and Valley Road. At one time this was the location of the Cathedral Pines, which was a rare stand of old-growth white pines. But a few years back, a tornado cut a swath through the outskirts of town, taking down everything in its path, including the pines. You can still see vivid reminders of the tornado’s power in the broken trunks of enormous trees that stand on the hills like match sticks.

If you are here in September, you won’t want to miss the Belchertown Annual Fair. Just a few The Hills of Central Massachusetts 47 yards down Route 202 to the west is the Stone House Museum, which features artifacts and antiques from the town’s historical association. By following Route 202 north, you begin to circle the west side of Quabbin. Stop at Pelham to see the 1839 Congregational Church and the 1739 town hall, said to be the oldest one in continuous use in New England. Pelham was the home of Daniel Shay, a Revolutionary War hero who led an uprising of farmers opposed to heavy taxation against the government in 1786.

They feature period pieces from over 200 years of the Casey family descendants. Survey equipment used by Thomas Lincoln Casey in the building of the Washington Monument and Library of Congress are on display. The dining room holds china from the 1700s, as well as documents, paintings and antique furniture. A reminder of the Revolutionary War is represented by a bullet hole in the parlor door, from an encounter between Patriots and British sailors from ships blockading Narragansett Bay. The Casey homestead is still a working farm.
