The missionaries were tireless - and increasingly tiresome - in their efforts to recruit him to Christianity, hoping that a royal convert would inspire a tidal wave of Siamese to follow suit. Mongkut was patient and tolerant with the missionaries, even providing a room in his monastery for one of them, saying the man was welcome to convert as many Siamese as he could.

The women lived splendidly in the Grand Palace, a vast walled enclosure comparable to Beijing’s Forbidden City, protected by battlements and elaborate gateways. By most accounts, there were 3,000 to 4,000 women in the palace, with no men allowed after dark. They included his queens and concubines, thousands of servants and administrators, surviving consorts and daughters of deceased kings, and a force of female guards to keep order in the harem.
