Often internal interviewees assume that you know them, and therefore they are not always as forthcoming with information. Informing people that they have not been selected is never easy. I try to focus on what they did well but also let them know how they did not meet the selection criteria. No matter how many of these I experience, giving bad news is always difficult. Out with the Problem The number one tip for any person who has to manage staff, regardless of the position: make file notes. I have learned the hard way that you must document your interactions and conversations with staff.

The employment process is never simple. Before I conducted my first interview, I read articles and books and discussed with others how they performed interviews. Getting an idea of the process and my role in it made me feel more at ease. The most important lesson I learned is how to write effective questions. This enables the candidate to refer to practical experiences and not just recite the standard textbook answer. Internal job interviews are often the most difficult. Often internal interviewees assume that you know them, and therefore they are not always as forthcoming with information.
