Self-esteem can take a hit if it seems like your aspirations are impossible to reach, as you are not managing your goals. One positive way to ensure that your aims will work for you is by making them SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound). This means you should know exactly what it is you want to achieve (S), you should be able to measure your progress (M), it should be possible for you to achieve it, though not too easy (A), it should relate to your wider aims (R), and you should know when you want to have reached your goal by (T).

You may even find reasons, however spurious, that such thoughts are 'true'. If this is the case, try this simple exercise: think about your best friend, sibling or colleague; somebody you respect. Now, do you think this person would agree with your negative thoughts? Would they say the sort of things to you that you are saying to yourself? And finally, would you tell the other person what you are telling yourself? The likelihood is that your answer is no. You may even be shocked at the thought; why would you treat someone that way?

However, the best thing to do is to draw a mental line under it, learn from what has happened and try again. As long as you are still trying, you are working towards your long-term aims, and as long as you are doing that, you are never truly failing.
