Penn Central moved the former Pennsy’s Cleveland-Columbus traffic to a former Big Four route between the two cities. Louisville was also home to the largest free black community in Kentucky with smaller free black settlements in southern Indiana. To solve this early form of grid-lock, the City Plan Board of Dayton made a comprehensive study of the elevation of the tracks through downtown in 1924. The western boundary is the Mississippi River, the eastern boundary is made up of the Big Sandy River and the Tug Fork, and the northern boundary is approximately 700 miles of the Ohio River. The exact details of what sweeteners were offered to the railroad conglomerate by the city and state, and possibly Toyota, were never disclosed but in the end the UP did allow the BNSF limited trackage rights to the factory, but certainly not any further towards Corpus Christi, and the plant was built in San Antonio after all.

Thus Canada was the closest place for slaves to escape. We are an all volunteer group that promotes Railroad History in Northwest Ohio. It is believed, however, that he was endeavoring to board a freight or coal train for home when he was thrown under the train and killed. The new depot was a very busy place during its first 30 years with as many as 66 passenger trains a day serving Dayton. s part of a grade crossing elimination project, the tracks through downtown Dayton were elevated above street level during 1930-31 and the station platforms were also raised (see details of this below).
