Railroads faced their toughest adversity during the 1960s and 1970s when it lost so much market share that many companies were either purchased by stronger ones or simply went bankrupt. All of these lights are original to the building and must have seemed spectacular in 1902. In 1942, the six track Port Perry Yard spanning Turtle Creek was built to improve the availability of raw materials to Edgar Thomson Steel Works. With the connection over the Champlain Islands complete, shippers would route less through business via the D. & H. and Addison railroads though the actual distance was about equal.

Among railroad highlights in Boone county: In 1866 the railroad reached Montana and the communities of Ogden and Moingona were formed by the railroad. The songs sung by slaves were expressions of sorrow in their harsh living conditions and faith that a better life was promised in heaven. The Midwest Raleigh Steel Corporation received $125,000 for seven miles of "main line" track from Cass to Old Spruce and four miles of branch line from Old Spruce to Bald Knob. Another big job was the building of the Rapello and the Lyman Viaducts, east of Easthampton.
