It is very confusing to have someone appear to want to give to you but never follow through. The French have no problem saying no to dessert or a second serving (unless they really want it), to some crazy exercise (unless they really want to try it), to anything that feels wrong. These may include when, for how long, and how frequently the parents agree to talk business with one another regarding financial matters, legal matters, etc. I made a promise to myself, and to my kids, that I'll never let it happen again.
